Swipe right for potential tenants
A start-up that mixes house hunting for landlords and tenants with the swipe left/swipe right mechanics of Tinder is gaining traction after receiving £23m in funding from the US investment firm that also invested in Monzo.
The app, Badi, allows landlords to vet potential candidates, and after the initial matchmaking process, instant message them to find out more about them. The app also aims to remove the inconvenience to landlords of showing dozens of strangers round their property until they find the right fit.
Like any burgeoning technology, Badi will provide many conveniences to landlords and tenants alike, by cutting unnecessary costs and connecting people with similar values.
However, like the swipe left/swipe right dating apps that have come before, catfishing, the process of luring someone into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona, will undoubtedly be a problem.
So how can landlords using the app verify that their prospective tenant is who they say they are?
Firstly, we encourage all landlords to complete a tenant check, which you can order through NLA Tenant Check. You will need to have the name, date of birth and current/previous address for each tenant/guarantor you wish to check.
You will also need to know how long they have lived at their current address. It is a legal requirement to obtain consent from each person prior to carrying out the check. You can obtain this by using our consent declaration form.
However, for Full/Express Tenant Checks you may invite the applicants to complete their applications online. If you choose this option, then NLA Tenant Check will obtain the consent directly from the tenant or guarantor.
The applicant will be asked to provide their consent during the application process and will also have to print and sign a declaration and return it to us. Please note that our services are governed by the 1998 Data Protection Act.
