News release

Barry Markham re-appointed to NLA board

01 July 2009

Barry Markham has been re-appointed as a director of the National Landlords Association (NLA).

Mr Markham initially became an NLA director in July 2008 when the NLA merged with the Southern Private Landlords Association (SPLA), formerly trading as the National Federation of Residential Landlords (NFRL).

In November 2008, in view of the legal challenges relating to the merger, Mr Markham resigned from the NLA Board. He concluded it was in the best interests of both parties to be able to defend the SPLA Board decisions without any allegations of a potential conflict of interest.

In May 2009, the High Court dismissed all legal challenges to the merger. And following a recent NLA Board meeting, Mr Markham was re-appointed.

David Salusbury, Chairman, NLA, commenting on Mr Markham’s re-appointment, said:

“It is a great pleasure to welcome Barry back on to the NLA Board. It was critical that SPLA directors who made decisions about the merger were free to defend their actions. And now that the High Court has made its decision, we can put past difficulties behind us and move on. His many years of experience will be of great benefit to the NLA and its members.”

Mr Markham remains a director of the SPLA.

Notes to Editors:
The National Landlords Association (NLA) exists to protect and promote the interests of private residential landlords. With almost 19,000 individual landlords from around the United Kingdom and over 90 local authority associates, it provides a comprehensive range of benefits and services to its members and strives to raise standards in rented accommodation. The NLA seeks to safeguard landlords’ legitimate interests by making their collective voice heard by local and central government and the media. The NLA seeks a fair legislative and regulatory environment for the private-rented sector while aiming to ensure that landlords are aware of their statutory rights and responsibilities.
